Manager, Limbe Floors

Limbe Auction Floors is the historic flagship trading floor of Malawi’s tobacco industry, serving as the primary commercial hub for growers across the Southern Region. Established as the pioneer market of the national tobacco trade, the floor was built to provide a centralized, structured marketplace for Southern Region farmers, eliminating the informal trading channels of the early twentieth century.
The floor officially opened at its current site in 1970, though its operational roots date back to the founding of Tobacco Auctions Limited in 1936. As the oldest operating floor in the country, Limbe laid the foundation for organized tobacco auctioning in Malawi, setting the operational standard for all subsequent floors built across the nation.
The primary leaf types traded at Limbe are Flue-Cured Virginia (FCV) tobacco and Burley tobacco, along with Southern Dark-Fired varieties. Given the favorable agro-ecological conditions of the Southern Region, Limbe serves as a major focal point for high-grade Flue-Cured tobacco, offering full trading facilities for both open-cry auction transactions and direct contract farming arrangements.
The Limbe floor traditionally marks the official commencement of Malawi’s annual tobacco marketing season, often opening first alongside Lilongwe. Its strategic location in the commercial capital of Blantyre provides direct proximity to processing factories, major banking institutions, and export logistics routes, reinforcing its role as an indispensable driver of the Southern Region’s agricultural economy.
